The Arlington Renegades lost a key piece of their defense on Tuesday. According to the league, Christian Sam was placed on the suspended list. The reasoning behind the move is unknown.
Most recently, Sam spent training camp with the Dallas Cowboys in 2022 before being waived by the team. He played most of the 2022 USFL season with the Tampa Bay Bandits but finished it with the New Orleans Breakers, racking up 54 tackles and one interception on the year.
Sam's pro career began when he was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by New England. After winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2019, Sam had brief stints as a member of the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions before joining the Cowboys in 2022.
In four seasons at Arizona State, Sam made 240 total tackles, 17 tackles for loss, seven sacks, seven pass deflections, three interceptions and three forced fumbles in 40 games.
The linebackers on the Renegades roster are still in good shape, with Donald Payne leading the way in the middle. During the open practice on Saturday, Payne teamed up with Marquel Lee in the lineup. Others can step up as well, with Willie Taylor, Vic Beasley, and Tuzar Skipper all bringing plenty of experience playing at a high level.
Arlington must cut down its roster to 50 players by Saturday with the UFL regular season just over a week away.
