Chrono Trigger, released on the Super Nintendo thirty years ago, is generally considered one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Many fans wonder why the game hasn’t received a full remake after three decades. Well, it was thought that Yuji Horii, co-designer of the game, might be considering a remake; however, some of that information might have been lost in translation.

Possible Chrono Trigger Remake?

At the 25th Comicon Napoli, Horii supposedly said he was working on a Chrono Trigger remake. With the game turning 30 in 2025, now would seem like a good time to think about a remake, especially with Square Enix’s monumental Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy generating so much love among fans and critics. However, Horii’s comments were later revealed to be a mistranslation.

Is All Hope Lost?

On the other hand, in a later interview, Horii was asked about a Chrono Trigger remake and that he is “starting to contemplate on it.” This means that there is no official remake in production, but there might be talk of one sometime in the future. Of course, people shouldn’t make any assumptions one way or the other. Meanwhile, if no remake happens, we still have the stellar original game.

What Could a Remake Entail?

A lack of remake confirmation won’t stop fans from speculating about a possible remake. Would a Chrono Trigger remake be in 2.5-D like the Dragon Quest HD-2D Remake games? Would it get the full 3-D treatment like the Super Mario RPG remake? Would it expand on the lore and story like the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy? There are infinite possibilities.

Conclusion

Since Chrono Trigger is considered close to perfect, a remake would need a lot of care and dedication in order to please fans of the original. Perhaps one of the reasons why there hasn’t been a remake is the uncertainty about how to improve on the original game. Indeed, if fans waited over thirty years for a remake and the only thing they got was updated graphics, they might be disappointed. If a remake ever happens, we will want it to show as much love and passion as the original game.
