After Hollow Knight was released back in 2017, fans have been begging for a sequel. Hollow Knight Silksong was then announced on February 14, 2019, thanks to the critical acclaim and popularity of the original. Since that time, though, not much has happened. The game is still not out, and a release date has also not been set, although the studio has said it will be out in 2025. Well, the gaming industry now knows that the game will be playable in September 2025, but with a massive caveat. It is only playable in one place.

Hollow Knight Silksong Set To Release In September, But At An Australian Museum

At this point, it almost feels like a taunt. Hollow Knight Silksong, after much anticipation, will be released in September of 2025 in some capacity. Unfortunately, it is not the capacity fans are hoping for. Anyone who would like to play the game at that time will be required to travel to Australia, where the game will be playable at the Melbourne-based museum, ACMI. According to IGN, “Silksong will be playable at the Melbourne museum as part of a video game exhibition called Game Worlds, which will also include displays that delve into the game’s design and artistic direction.”

ACMI co-curators Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell released a statement regarding the partnership and exhibit.

“Since Hollow Knight: Silksong’s initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September. From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights – and of course, having the game playable in-gallery – our Silksong displays delve deeply into the details of the game’s artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and so excited to share that work with you!”

Hollow Knight Silksong has been part of many gaming streams of late, most recently during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. It may have been only a few seconds, but it was enough to stir the excitement of fans, and soon after, Team Cherry confirmed the game will be available in 2025. Now, given that the game will be playable as a demo at the museum exhibit, one could assume that the game may be released before that September timeframe, but it is just as likely that the game will not even be fully completed yet. The problem is, with no actual confirmation, fans are still left to wonder and guess.

Final Thoughts

Hollow Knight Silksong has been one of the most anticipated and mysteriously hidden releases in recent video game memory. The team has held so much close to their chest, and fans are chomping at the bit to get more information. This museum announcement may be a morsel of that, but fans are hoping a full release date is on the horizon. When the game is released, it will be available for Switch, Switch 2, PC, and possibly Xbox, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 as well. Perhaps at one of the upcoming gaming shows, we will have more of a concrete answer.
