While Stadium is an Overwatch 2 game mode, several aspects vary from core gameplay. The changes make it feel significantly different from your standard games. It is a best-of-seven format. Teams fight on different map types, there will be different game types in each match, so be prepared!

The twist here is that every round, players accumulate cash that allows them to upgrade their current hero in various ways. So far, it seems the upgrades increase the power fantasy of each hero. One last change is that you can choose first or third-person views. It has its rank progression, so ascend to the top and boast to your friends! Stadium releases in Season 16 on April 22nd, eight days from now.

Upgrades Revealed

The gameplay trailer revealed a host of upgrades players can choose from. Moira has more orbs to throw out. Ana can nano-boost her entire team if they are near one another, but the duration is reduced by fifty percent. Genji has an upgrade called Beamflection, which allows him to deflect beams. Reinhardt can fly, Mei can turn into a rolling ice block, and Ashe can send out a miniature B.O.B. These are only a few upgrades showcased during the gameplay trailer, and there are bound to be hundreds more.

It is likely that the more expensive an upgrade is, the more it will change about a character. The cheaper upgrades will likely give bonuses to heroes, but keep the core gameplay the same. With the release of Stadium just around the corner, it is exciting to see what the Overwatch developers have cooked up for every hero!

Final Thoughts

While this mode is separate from the core ranked gameplay of Overwatch 2, it makes for a promising release. Players loved the idea of a talent tree for the now-scrapped PvE version, and Stadium seems to present a similar aspect. It is not a talent tree by any means, but the ability to alter a hero’s kit is exhilarating. The game mode is unlikely to shift the core competitive scene, but it presents an opportunity for players to have fun in ways they have never been able to until now.
