Deck-building games have had some success recently in the video game community, with Balatro standing tall as one of the top-rated games of 2024. Deckline aims to join the genre, but bring a war-torn horror-themed atmosphere alongside it. Inscryption is presently the only major threat in the horror card space, which gives the new game a chance to set itself apart and carve out a niche group of fans for itself. The 1990s Eastern European setting built within a warzone helps take what is otherwise a simple card game and spin it into an engaging, atmospheric PC game.
There really is not a lot of depth or particularly layered concepts to Deckline, though that is not to say it is not well done. The game atmosphere provides a great deal of suspense. According to developer KREIDPIX, “Deckline is an atmospheric war-horror card game. Out of ammo and encircled, you play one last game of Durak to distract from the inevitable. Experience the grit and dread of modern combat through the lens of a board game.”
The card game featured in the game, Durak, is actually built around a random mechanic, which allows for constant replayability. According to Bloody Disgusting, “Deckline sports unlimited replayability, thanks to the dynamic, randomized gameplay mechanics that constantly reshape playstyle, as well as the game’s global leaderboard and built-in score system. Along with a Story Mode that features several diverse endings, there’s also an infinite competitive mode.”

What Makes Deckline A Horror Game?
The horror elements of Deckline mainly come from the storyline and atmosphere itself. By making the game take place right on the battlefield, the players get to experience the true emotional pain of battle firsthand. War brings out a certain hopelessness that only soldiers can understand. By setting the players up to be in a moment of utter doom and hopelessness, the atmosphere of the game has horror undertones. Each soldier shares war stories, which only furthers the devastating aura.
A full trailer of the game was released by the indie developer.
The game is currently available for players on PC through Steam.
