Aces rout Liberty in Game 2, set WNBA Finals record

The Las Vegas Aces are one game away from basketball immortality.

Thanks to a historic offensive explosion on Wednesday, Vegas took a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five WNBA Finals, blowing out the New York Liberty 104-76 in Game 2.

Four of the Aces' five starters finished in double figures, with forward A'ja Wilson (26) and guards Jackie Young (24) and Kelsey Plum (23) topping 20 points apiece. According to Alexa Philippou of ESPN, Vegas is the first team in WNBA history to have three 20-point scorers in multiple Finals games and the first to do so in consecutive playoff games, period.

In Game 1 on Sunday, Plum (26), Young (26) and guard Chelsea Grey (20) accomplished the feat, helping lead the Aces to a 99-82 victory.

While the Aces trailed for a time in Game 1, they left little doubt about the result of Game 2. On Wednesday, Vegas went to work quickly, building a 19-point lead in the opening frame while setting a WNBA Finals record by scoring 38 first-quarter points.

The Liberty cut the lead to eight at the halftime break, but the Aces outscored New York 28-13 in the third to seal the victory.

Both Wilson and Gray had double-doubles in Game 2. Wilson added 15 boards to her 26-point night, while Gray recorded 14 points and 11 assists to aid the effort of Vegas' big three.

The Aces are one win away from a three-game sweep, which would also make them the first back-to-back WNBA champions since the 2001-2002 Los Angeles Sparks. History is on Vegas' side, too. No WNBA team has come back from a 2-0 series deficit in the postseason, going 0-17, per ESPN Stats and Info.
