In a 96-89 win over the Los Angelos Sparks on Thursday, Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty elevated their record to an impressive 32-7 with Ionescu breaking the all-time single-season 3-point record in style.

Ionescu broke the enduring record previously owned by Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury, who had notched 121 3-pointers during her 2006 season with the team.

“It’s an honor, any time you’re able to pass arguably the greatest basketball player that ever played in the WNBA,” Ionescu said.

After a slow first half for Ionescu, shooting 0-8 from the field including missing all three 3-pointers she attempted, she amped up her game out of halftime.

Her first 3-pointer of the game came in the third quarter to tie Taurasi’s record. Two minutes later, Ionescu banked in a corner three to break the 17-year standing record with 122 3-pointers in a single-season. Ionescu finished with four 3-pointers and 16 points.

“That’s a great accomplishment,” said New York coach Sandy Brondello. “Diana is one of the greatest of all-time, and Sabrina’s like a little Diana.”

Brondello was head coach for the Mercury from 2014 to 2021, spending eight years with Taurasi in Phoenix.

With one more game remaining in the regular season for the Liberty, Ionescu holds the new record with 124 3-pointers in a single-season.
