What signing Allisha Gray means for Atlanta Dream

The Atlanta Dream extended the contract of guard Allisha Gray, the team announced on Tuesday.

"Having Allisha committed to our squad long-term is another big step in solidifying our core for the future," said Dream head coach Tanisha Wright. "Not only is Gray an amazing addition on the court, but who she is as a person will be a great representation for our organization off the court."

The former 2017 Rookie of the Year spent six seasons with the Dallas Wings, averaging 11.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and two assists per game in 180 contests. She started in 160 games for the Wings throughout her career.

The Dream traded for Gray, sending the No. 3 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft and a 2025 first-round pick to Dallas.

"Just as we stated when we first acquired Allisha, this is a big win for our franchise," said general manager Dan Padover. "Allisha's game speaks for itself, and she is going to play a pivotal role in our pursuit to becoming a contender.

"We and Allisha can now gain comfort in knowing this isn't a short-term stay and we're in this together."

This year may finally be the year for playoff contention.

Letting go of their No. 3 pick in a top-heavy 2023 class shows the Dream's commitment to winning now. Complete with fantastic young talent like guard Rhyne Howard and forward Naz Hillmon, the team may be on the upswing for the first time in five years.

Having veteran talent like Gray and forward Cheyenne Parker will not put them into championship contention just yet, but after several years of rebuilding, the Dream have done a solid job at setting a foundation for the future around the team's young stars.

Should everything go well, the Dream may secure their first winning record since 2018.
