Sabrina Ionescu’s Teammate Rejoins Liberty After Major Career Decision

The WNBA season tips off Friday with three games to launch the regular season. There’s no shortage of storylines, from the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty to Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese to the debuts of Paige Bueckers and Hailey Van Lith.

All eyes are on the league, and teams are working hard to put their best rosters on the court.

On Monday, Underdog WNBA reported the latest addition to the New York Liberty roster. As the team prepares for its opener, it will get a boost alongside star guard Sabrina Ionescu.

"Leonie Fiebich (overseas commitment) is expected to rejoin Liberty as soon as Thursday, per @madkenney," the report said.

Fiebich, a 25-year-old forward from Germany, was selected 22nd overall in the 2020 WNBA draft. Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks, she never played for them. She was then traded to the Chicago Sky, but again, never saw court time. Fiebich finally made her WNBA debut in February 2024 with the Liberty

She made an immediate impact in the playoffs, setting a Liberty record for the most points in a playoff debut with 21.

Now, she rejoins the 27-year-old Ionescu. The top overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft has played her entire career with New York. A three-time All-Star, Ionescu also won the 3-point contest in 2023. She starred in college for the Oregon Ducks.

New York is coming off a dominant 32-8 regular season. Under head coach Sandy Brondello, the Liberty swept the Atlanta Dream in two games, defeated the Las Vegas Aces in four and went the distance in the WNBA Finals to beat the Minnesota Lynx and win their first-ever championship.

The Liberty open their 2025 campaign Saturday at home against the Las Vegas Aces. They then hit the road for games against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on May 22, followed by a matchup with Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on May 24.
