WNBA Team Sparks Relocation Rumors Just Days Before First Game
Mark Smith

The 2025 WNBA regular season is right around the corner, with the preseason wrapped up and teams finalizing their rosters. Each team must trim down to no more than 12 players ahead of opening day.

For the Connecticut Sun, the week began with more than just roster decisions. While the team gears up for its regular season opener against the Washington Mystics on Sunday, a major report surfaced Monday.

According to Sportico's Kurt Badenhausen and Eben Novy-Williams, the "owners of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun hired investment bank Allen & Company to explore the sale of the franchise, according to multiple people familiar with the details. Mohegan Sun, a subsidiary of Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, has owned the club since 2003."

The Sun are based in Uncasville, Connecticut—a town with just over 18,000 residents. It’s one of the smallest, if not the smallest, markets in the WNBA. So it’s no surprise that if new ownership takes over, relocation could realistically be on the table.

"The Sun could raise capital through an LP stake sale, but the expectation is a control sale and likely franchise relocation," Badenhausen and Novy-Williams added.

Some potential cities new ownership could consider for relocation include Boston, Cleveland, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Houston, St. Louis, Austin, Milwaukee, and others. Boston, in particular, stands out as an intriguing option.

Former NBA player Michael Carter-Williams has publicly expressed interest in bringing a WNBA team to Boston. More notably, he was asked about the possibility of purchasing the Sun and relocating the franchise there.

"I think we’re open to all possibilities," Carter-Williams said. "That would be great if that could happen. The main goal is to just get a team to Boston. And I think there’s many different avenues [through which] that could happen. That’s the goal — no matter what road we need to travel to get there, that’s what we want to do."
