WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event XLI is officially in the books.
Cody Rhodes notched another defense in his second reign as Undisputed WWE Champion. Jade Cargill finally clinched a singles title for the first time in the promotion. Dominik Mysterio retained the Intercontinental title, and CM Punk regained what was stolen from him at the end of SummerSlam.
Here are a few lessons that can be taken from the event.
It has been a long time since Drew McIntyre held a world title – his career-defining reign in 2020 that saw him become a pillar of the pandemic era. Against his former tag team partner, Rhodes, he has now had two shots and two losses. That is not a good look for him as he enters the back end of his career.
“Randy Orton staring at Cody Rhodes’ title” has happened so many times that it might as well be a meme by this point. Enough with the memes, though. It is time this matchup becomes reality.
The student vs. the teacher – there are a myriad of possibilities for both men. Will Orton finally become a snake again after a long time or will Rhodes finally “sell his soul to the devil”?
Losing the WWE Women’s Championship may be devastating for Tiffany Stratton in the short term, but it will only help her in the long term. It may be the impetus she needs to refresh her character.
After all, Stratton works best as a snobby heel who thinks she is above all. That whiny (for lack of a better term) voice is more fitting for a villain than a hero, to begin. There is also her presentation: vapidly glittery and glamorous, as if she were the wrestling version of an influencer.
Punk and Gunther had a classic at SummerSlam that was marred by the ending, as Seth Rollins came in to steal the title after it had ended. With “The Architect” out of commission, however, now is the time to do it again, hopefully without The Vision, who may be busy with WarGames at Survivor Series.
Speaking of Survivor Series: WarGames, that is the next major event in WWE’s calendar.
Multiple titles will be put on hold as storylines converge for a pair of car-crash matches that pit teams of five against each other. Still, expect some belts to be safe, as not every champion can be involved, or some need to be active defenders of what they hold. It will be interesting to see how events on Raw and SmackDown unfold from here.
