CM Punk calls for a wrestlers union, brands peers 'selfish and stupid'

CM Punk is still making headlines. The combative wrestler hasn't been on our TV screens since his appearance at AEW All Out, where he got into a backstage altercation with Jack Perry. Punk was released from AEW for his role in the fray, but he hasn't stayed quiet.

During an interview with 670 The Score, Punk shared his belief that wrestlers should have a union.

"For professional wrestling, yeah, wrestlers should 100% have a union," Punk said. "I’ll always say this, and I mean it in the most loving way; wrestlers will never unionize because wrestlers are stupid and selfish. That’s just the way it is...When your boss is a billionaire and you don’t want to rock the boat — this isn’t in wrestling, this applies to anything...I’ve never been that guy. I’m always like, ‘I don’t need the money. This is wrong and I get to tell people it’s wrong.’"

Punk is known as a disruptor. He's ruffled feathers in every brand he's worked in. He knows he's a big draw, both in attendance and merchandise sales, and he understands his value to a company. His comments also likely have wrestlers' best interests at heart — Punk has always been rumored to be supportive and open to his peers.

However, his message would be better served coming from someone else. Punk's recent release from his contract, followed by talks of unionizing, has a frustrated undertone to it. He already served a suspension in AEW for backstage controversy, returned and did it again. The release was justified.

Punk could find himself a new wrestling home if he wanted to. TNA or NJPW would both jump at the opportunity to have his talent on their rosters. The fact is Punk is disillusioned with the industry. He sees the flaws in a monopolized market, and he wants to be part of a change he believes is needed.

That's all good and dandy, but somebody needs to tell him he's not the guy to be the face of that change — not so soon after his ill-fated spell with AEW, anyway.
