In December 2021, Freddie Prinze Jr. announced his plans to start a wrestling promotion. Until April 2024, there had not been much of an update. Speaking on his podcast Wrestling With Freddie, Prinze Jr. gave fans an intriguing update on the situation.
“It’s something I announced about two years ago that I was going to try and do this. I am now pitching. I pitched to one place and it’s still actively out there. They haven’t said yes, they haven’t said no.”
He explained that he has been speaking with multiple potential suitors about his new promotion, specifically regarding the type of content that will be produced and the style of show that he would like to create.
Prinze Jr. continued, stating that he feels “crazy confident” about finding a home for his promotion. He suggested that companies have responded well to his pitches, albeit none have given a guarantee just yet.
“If they say no, I’ll let you guys know and I’ll ask you to cry me a river, but I feel confident about this. I felt confident about the first one, but as time goes on, even though it’s not a no, it makes me feel like it’s a no. These people have said everything but the word yes. I feel crazy confident about this. I have four more places to go.”
When asked by his co-host Jeff Dye what would set his promotion apart from the likes of the mainstream companies (AEW and WWE), he explained that “the look of it will be much different than AEW and WWE.” Although it’s unclear exactly what that means, he shed a little more light on the idea.
“There was a show called Lucha Underground, which utilized space really well, which had a cool look to it. I always liked that. I’m not saying I’m going to do that, but I would say I’m somewhere in-between what WWE and AEW are doing and somewhere in-between Lucha Underground, somewhere in the middle is where I’m at.”
Lucha Underground is remembered for its distinct production style. Their weekly television ran for four years (2014-2018) and featured a number of future stars, with the likes of Swerve Strickland, Ricochet, and Penta El Zero Miedo all featuring over the years.
If Prinze Jr. can launch his promotion and use it to springboard the careers of up-and-coming independent stars, it would be a fitting tribute to Lucha Underground.
“I don’t know where our home is going to be, but I think we’re going to have a home.”
It seems as though things are moving in a positive direction for the star of Scooby-Doo and I Know What You Did Last Summer, so keep an eye on this space. It’ll be interesting to see his vision come to life and hopefully, there will be some more exciting updates soon!
