Laurinaitis was released from WWE sometime in the first week of August 2022. His departure followed allegations made in a Wall Street Journal story that accused him and Vince McMahon of misconduct. Laurinaitis was also a subject of a subsequent investigation by the WWE Board of Directors into several hush money agreements, including one from a former employee who alleged they had a sexual relationship with both men.

WWE hired Laurinaitis as a road agent in 2001 after WCW closed down. He held several executive roles throughout his 21 years with the company, including as Head of Talent Relations.
