“Macho Man” Randy Savage followed in Hulk Hogan’s footsteps and joined WCW in 1994. The signing made him the second biggest name after the Hulkster to jump ship from Vince McMahon’s WWE to Ted Turner’s promotion.
The Macho Man found himself in heated feuds with some of the WCW loyalists after he joined the promotion. His stint in the company saw him deliver some high-quality matches and become involved in heated feuds.
Having said that, let’s take a look at Macho Man’s five best matches in WCW.
Randy Savage & Ric Flair vs. Arn Anderson & Eddie Guerrero (WCW Slamboree ’96)
WCW had some weird concepts for matches back in the day. One such concept was a Lord of the Ring tournament with an opportunity at the world title at The Great American Bash ’96. Tournament matches were contested at Slamboree, which had wrestlers partake in random pairings for Lethal Lottery tag team matches.
The Macho Man teamed up with archrival Ric Flair against Eddie Guerrero and Arn Anderson in one of the matches. Since Flair and Anderson were very much an alliance at that time, they attacked Savage before the match. The pair continued to work together despite being on the opposite team.
In the end, the Enforcer turned on his own partner Eddie Guerrero, allowing the Nature Boy to pick up the win. This was an unusual bout for its time, but gave fans plenty of drama and action to enjoy.
Randy Savage & Hulk Hogan Vs. Ric Flair & Vader (WCW Slamboree ’95)
Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage turned their Mega Powers gimmick into The Monster Maniacs in WCW. The pair battled it out against the formidable duo of Ric Flair and Vader in a tag team match at WCW Slamboree on May 21, 1995.
The Nature used his dirty tactics while Vader relied on his monstrous strength to keep the Macho Man and the Hulkster at bay. The babyfaces eventually fought back and picked up the win after Hogan took down Flair with the leg drop.
Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash & Scott Hall vs. Macho Man, Lex Luger & Sting (WCW Bash At The Beach ’96)
The Macho Man was one of The Outsiders fiercest enemies before he eventually sided with the group. At Bash at the Beach ’96, Savage guided Lex Luger and Sting against Scott Hall and Kevin Nash in a six-person tag team match.
Most of the match saw the odds against The Outsiders. It wasn’t until Hulk Hogan showed up to reveal his true colors that the match turned in favor of the heels. The Hulkster landed his patented leg drop on his archrival Savage to kick off the New World Order.
Vs. Diamond Dallas Page (WCW The Great American Bash ’97)
One of Macho Man’s most heated rivalries came against Diamond Dallas Page in WCW. The pair went a full year, going blow for blow against each other. After losing to DDP in their No Disqualification Match at WCW Spring Stampede in April 1997, Savage met his bitter rival two months later at The Great American Bash PPV event.
The two men brawled all over the arena due to the match having the Falls Count Anywhere stipulation. The Macho Man used his veteran instinct to deliver a crafty, brutal beating on Dallas Page. The violent spectacle lasted for about 17 minutes and featured a run-in from Scott Hall.
The nWO member hit the Outsider’s Edge on Page, allowing Macho Man to hit his opponent with the flying elbowsmash for the win.
Macho Man Randy Savage Vs. Ric Flair (WCW The Great American Bash ’95)
Randy Savage reignited his rivalry with Ric Flair after arriving in WCW in 1994. The Macho Man found himself in the opposite corner of the Nature Boy on multiple occasions, but it was their The Great American Bash clash in 1995 that turned out to be their best in WCW.
The Macho Man was managed in the match by his father, the legendary Angelo Poffo. However, Poffo’s cane would prove useful for Ric Flair, who used it to deliver punishment on Savage and ended up winning the match.
The match ended up getting four stars from Dave Meltzer and became the highest-rated match of the Macho Man’s WCW career.
