Stone Cold doesn't rule out dream match with CM Punk

The WWE are riding the crest of a wave. The Rock's return has re-ignited the imagination of some older sections of the fanbase. There's genuine excitement about the road to WrestleMania and how The Rock will feature within the Cody Rhodes storyline.

However, it would appear some older WWE fans may have another reason to relive their childhood. During a recent interview with Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Stone Cold Steve Austin refused to rule out a potential dream match against CM Punk.

"I like Punk, and I think Punk likes me -- so, as long as he can take a Stunner," Stone Cold said. h/t to Fightful for the transcription. "I consider him a great friend, a great guy and a great wrestler who's had a great career. We'll see."

Punk is currently absent from the WWE due to a torn tricep. He received the injury during the Royal Rumble. That's the reason why he won't be facing Seth Rollins at WrestleMania. However, a potential match against Stone Cold later this year could be a major draw, both for Punk and the WWE Universe.

Stone Cold is one of few wrestlers to have a similar impact as The Rock. He would draw similar interest should he return for a match. Pairing him off against Punk would be genius. Both wrestlers have a die-hard section of the fanbase, and both know how to drum up interest online.

If the WWE could get both Punk and Austin to agree to the match, it would be interesting to see how they marketed it. A match of that magnitude would need to be the headliner of a major premium live event. It would be fitting if it occurred at Survivor Series, as that would mark the one-year anniversary of Punk's return.

A lot would need to go right for us to get Punk vs. Stone Cold. Even if it were to happen, it may not be until 2025, so that the match could be a draw for WrestleMania. However, the concept of two wrestling legends facing off in a dream match is fun to think about.

Hopefully, that dream will become a reality.
