Rey Mysterio is getting closer to being able to return to the ring.

Mysterio underwent knee surgery for a torn meniscus in November and was expected to be out of action for 6-8 weeks. He was hoping to return in time for the Royal Rumble, but that didn't end up happening.

In the new edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer gave an updated timeline for Mysterio's return:

Rey Mysterio’s return now looks to be in a few weeks. He was hoping for late January but is pretty close to being ready to return.

Mysterio had been working hurt for months before having surgery. In storyline, the injury was blamed on an attack by Santos Escobar. Escobar turned against Mysterio by attacking him on the November 10 episode of SmackDown.

The Mysterio vs. Escobar feud should resume when Mysterio makes his return to WWE television. Escobar is aligned with Angel (Angel Garza), Berto (Humberto Carrillo), and Elektra Lopez against Mysterio and the LWO.

The LWO includes Zelina Vega, Joaquin Wilde, Cruz Del Toro, and Carlito.
