Watch: Pro wrestling 'Icon' Sting wrestles final match at AEW 'Revolution'
After gracing the squared circle for nearly four decades, Sting has left the building.
At Sunday's AEW "Revolution" pay-per-view, Sting participated in the final professional wrestling match of an iconic career. Fittingly, the 64-year-old did so in front of a sold-out crowd at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina, where the legend had countless memorable moments in the past.
Defending the AEW Tag Team Championships alongside Darby Allin against the Young Bucks, Sting received help from his two sons, Garrett and Steven Borden Jr., dressed as previous renditions of their father's character.
After a hard-fought and bloody battle, Sting was victorious. After the match, he grabbed a mic to say farewell.
A multiple-time world champion, Sting captured the imagination of young and old, carving a legacy few in the business could hope to equal.
Beginning his career in the early 1980s, Sting competed for over a dozen different wrestling promotions but is better known for his time with WCW (World Championship Wrestling) and TNA (Total Nonstop Action Wrestling).
He emerged as a star in WCW, first as "Surfer" Sting before transforming into the gimmick he's known for today, reminiscent of "The Crow." Later, he joined TNA, where he enjoyed success well into his 50s.
Meanwhile, after initially declining to join WWE after the wrestling giant purchased WCW in 2001, Sting signed in 2014 before being inducted into the company's Hall of Fame.
In 2020, AEW signed Sting, exposing the icon to a new generation. He wrestled sporadically but was a constant with the company, mainly teaming with young upstart and fellow face-painter Allin.
The two went on to win the tag titles, leading up to Sunday's swan song.
