With the Intercontinental Championship up for grabs at WrestleMania 40, will Sami Zayn dethrone Gunther to end his historic reign?

For nearly three years, Gunther has been WWE Intercontinental champion.

Sami Zayn won the gauntlet match on Monday, purchasing his ticket to face Gunther at WrestleMania 40 for his title.

Could Sami be the man to dethrone one of the most dominant IC champs in WWE history?

Is Sami Zayn the Man to Finally Beat Gunther?

Although he has his WrestleMania match against the ‘Ring General,’ will it be Zayn who finally takes his title?

Or is Chad Gable that man in the near future?

CBS News reports, “Gunther has held the intercontinental championship for a record 640 days.”

On Monday, the champion learned who he will defend the title against at WrestleMania 40 when six competitors entered a No. 1 contender gauntlet match in the main event of Raw,” CBS noted.

The story continued:

At the end of the night, Sami Zayn had his hand raised, outlasting Chad Gable to score the final pinfall of the gauntlet.

Gable Down But Still Holds His Head High

After his defeat, Gable gave a five minute interview in which he said he would not be re-challenging Zayn or trying to get a spot on the WrestleMania card.

He questioned what’s next, took his loss with dignity, and talked about basic respect. For himself, his opponent on Monday, and the pro wrestling business in general.

And respect for his family and those he cares about most.

It was a great effort by Gable, but also an important win for Sami. Both men deserve a spot on the WrestleMania card.

Time will tell. But becoming the man to finally beat Gunther remains one of the hottest opportunities in pro wrestling today.

So, will Sami Zayn defeat Gunther at WrestleMania to become the new Intercontinental Champion?
