WWE gets major update on Seth Rollins' injury

WWE has reportedly received an update on Seth Rollins. The World Heavyweight Champion suffered an injury during his title defense against Jinder Mahal on Jan. 15. Rollins continued with the match and came out victorious.

According to a report from Fightful, Rollins suffered a torn MCL and partially torn meniscus during the match.

"Unfortunately, the word in WWE and sources near Rollins are that he sustained a torn MCL and a partially torn meniscus," Fightful reported. "However, it is not known as of yet if he’ll require surgery, though the hope is that he can avoid it. We also aren’t sure how WWE will play things on television, or if the injury will be downplayed or embellished."

Rollins' injury likely puts WWE's plans for its upcoming premium live events into question. Royal Rumble is a week away, while Elimination Chamber is also fast approaching. There's no timeline on when Rollins will be fit to return to the ring. Nor is there any information regarding whether he will still attend episodes of Raw to cut promos while he continues his recovery.

There's also the looming question of how WWE chooses to move forward with the World Heavyweight Championship. It could potentially look to strip Rollins' of his belt if his tenure on the sidelines is expected to be a lengthy one. Or, they could take a leaf out of AEW's book and run a bracket-style tournament that stretches over multiple weeks, should Rollins' layoff not be too long.

Overall, though, the injury update is better than first thought. Rollins avoided an ACL tear, which could have been career-threatening. He will likely make a full recovery. And hopefully, we will see him back in the ring before the end of the year. It could have been far worse.
