The curious case of Chris Jericho ‘s prolonged absence from AEW television since April is getting more and more interesting. He’s allegedly on the verge of his contract with the Tony Khan -led promotion running out of time. Amid rumors of his potential WWE switch in 2026, ‘Y2J’ linked up with Kevin Owens yesterday.
The compatriots attended the Thursday-slated NHL game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Dallas Stars. Jericho posted their selfie on his Instagram and captioned it, “Best Friends!” Seeing these men reunite was endearing to their fans, and they couldn’t help but reminisce about the incredible feud they had back in 2016-17.
At the time, Jericho used to be Owens’ insurance policy. The Fozzy lead vocalist helped Owens retain the WWE Universal Championship on numerous occasions. ‘The Prizefighter’ eventually turned his back on the former AEW Champion during the ‘Festival of Friendship’ segment on Raw. It led to their singles match at WrestleMania 33, where Owens won the United States title from Jericho.
The placing of that match on the card made ‘Y2J’ feel disrespected by Vince McMahon, as Jericho and Owens were, at one point, given assurance by the then-WWE Chairman that they’d main event WrestleMania with the Universal title on the line. However, McMahon scrapped those plans at the behest of Brock Lesnar because the latter wanted to get even with Goldberg.
Well over 8 years removed from that period, is it time for Jericho to make his WWE return with Triple H now in charge of creative? Sean Ross Sapp recently noted on the Fightful Select Backstage Report that the 54-year-old would be offered several million dollars annually to come back to WWE.
As Chris Jericho's AEW contract winds down, sources in a number of national and global-level companies have told myself and @FightfulSelect they have interest in Chris Jericho.

Among them is WWE.

However, the sources told Sapp that AEW could match it based on where they’re at as a company right now and the fact that Jericho has been instrumental to their growth as well. Sapp also heard that even though Tony Khan wants to retain ‘Y2J’, he wouldn’t freeze his deal in case the veteran wrestler just wanted to let it expire on its own.
As to whether there have been any creative pitches made in WWE of late regarding Jericho, Sapp didn’t corroborate it. However, he did say that Jericho’s mention on WWE programming receiving overwhelming reactions from the crowd does bode well for his future in that company.
Take, for instance, John Cena using the Walls of Jericho against AJ Styles during their incredible Crown Jewel bout, which garnered a nuclear pop in Perth.
The man alongside Chris Jericho in the aforementioned post is his longtime wrestling mate, Kevin Owens. The latter is currently dealing with tough times, having undergone a neck fusion surgery in July 2025. He was forced to miss WrestleMania 41 against Randy Orton, as the damage was too severe to fight through.
After looking for alternatives in the meantime, the erstwhile Kevin Steen had to get his neck operated upon. The surgery was successful, and the fusion, as he described, ended up being a level one, which could be referred to as a best-case scenario in these kinds of situations.
His recovery time and a potential return to the ring are hinged on how the bones will fuse. If everything goes well, Owens said he would get back to wrestling again sometime in the next year. However, there’s also a possibility that things go the other way around and prolong his wait for a WWE return.
Who knows if Jericho and Owens will ultimately share the screen on WWE television yet again somewhere down the road? Their chemistry was immaculate, and WWE would like to cash in on it if the stars align themselves in such a way. Even though Chris Jericho has received a ton of flak for allegedly overstaying his welcome in wrestling, he might have a lot to offer if harnessed against the right set of stars.
