Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell ‘confident’ about Justin Jefferson signing a long-term extension with the Vikings
David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports

After losing star quarterback Kirk Cousins to the Atlanta Falcons, the Minnesota Vikings made sure to be steadfast in developing a satisfactory deal for star wide receiver Justin Jefferson , to, make him stay with the Vikings. After making prominent picks in the draft and signings in the offseason, only one thing remained unchecked on the Vikings’ offseason now– Jefferson’s contract.

Around the league, when the teams are paying their receiver lucrative extensions, head coach Kevin O’Connell seems rather confident while talking about wideout Jefferson’s extension situation. During his recent appearance on the Up & Adams podcast, host Kay Adams asked the Vikings head coach about the franchise’s negotiation to sign the Pro Bowler in a long-term deal

I know everything's gonna get worked out there. Justin knows the love and admiration that I have for him. He knows he's such a big part of what we do around here. That's on the field, that's off the field. [He] brings such a great energy to our building every single day. Kevin O’Connell told Kay Adams

O’Connell further emphasized Jefferson’s contribution to the team, saying he is a huge part of the organization. Just previously, the General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah showered high praise at the star wideout, while talking about his importance for the Vikings.

Justin Jefferson’s extension could set new NFL standard

In his four seasons in the NFL, Jefferson recorded close to 6,000 receiving yards and his extension with the Vikings is expected to transform the market if he signs a long-term. The way the Vikings head coach and general manager have been talking about him, his extension is likely to be grand.

During his interview with Adams, Minnesota’s head coach called his star wideout “ultra-competitor.” He talked about how Jefferson inspires and pushes his teammates to do better and makes the Vikings’ offense strong on the football field.

With the contract extension in negotiation right now, it might take a little longer for the NFL’s arguably best receiver to sign the papers. Due to the signing bonus policy, the franchise might not be able to sign him until July 31.
