Haney Vs. Garcia Rematch Is Possible – ‘The Rematch Is Huge, I Believe It Will Happen’
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

A rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia could still happen.

That is according to Eddie Hearn. Garcia dominated Haney in winning a majority decision. He dropped Haney three times to give The Dream the first career defeat. However, the result had many talking points. Garcia missed weight by 3.2 pounds, meaning he could not win Haney’s WBC Junior Welterweight Title, meaning Haney is still the champion despite a loss. Garcia then tested positive for Ostarine.

This substance is known for increasing muscle, removing fat and improving stamina. While Garcia maintains his innocent, strict liability means fighters are responsible for what they put in their bodies. Garcia could face a ban and see the result overturned into a no-contest. Haney’s legal team has already asked the New York State Athletic Commission to disqualify Garcia and give Haney the win. If that happens, there are grounds for a rematch.

Hearn Reacts

“Imagine you’re Devin Haney. You had to fight this guy [Ryan Garcia] that is a lot heavier than him, and now you found that out as well. Time is a good healer. The rematch is going to be huge. I believe the rematch will happen at some point, but we’ll wait and see,” Hearn said

Nevertheless, several hurdles need overcoming. Haney has said he does not want the rematch. He saw no sense in boxing a fighter who had tested positive. He was vocal about how he could have lost his life in the ring. Garcia also appeared reluctant to give a rematch, stating that he had beaten Haney fairly.

Haney’s Future

“Honestly I’m not too interested in it. During the build-up we’ve seen a lot of interesting things from him. We’ve seen his character, we’ve seen the guy cheat, we’ve seen the person that he is. I don’t see myself ever getting back in the ring [with him], but I’m a fighter speaking right now about how I feel, we never know what the future holds.

“As of right now, it wouldn’t be a fight I would entertain. As I said, this guy showed his character, he showed that he would do anything to win, including cheat, that’s just reality. Boxing is just a sport at the end of the day. He put my life in jeopardy. So now it’s deeper than boxing with me. I wanna take this thing somewhere else now. He could’ve done some real dangerous things to me that night,” Haney said

Secondly, the WBC has ordered Haney to defend his belt against Sandor Martin. Haney will likely want to take that fight; otherwise, he will be stripped. While he could give Martin step-aside money, that is unlikely since Sandor will want a shot at the title. But a Haney-Martin fight will struggle to sell. It will also reduce the current hype for a Haney-Garcia rematch. Until those issues are addressed, a Haney-Garcia rematch is unlikely.
