Vasiliy Lomachenko delivered a statement of his enduring brilliance on Saturday night with a masterclass of a performance to defeat George Kambosos Jr in Perth, Australia.

The Ukrainian (18-3-0 12 KO) broke down the game but limited Kambosos throughout a one-sided contest before securing the stoppage in the 11th round with two body shots.

The victory secured Lomachenko the IBF’s lightweight world title, making him a four-time world champion over three weight classes.

While there were some questions surrounding the 36-year-old’s long-term future in the ring, this performance against Kambosos proved there’s still plenty of life left in the brilliant Ukrainian.

So what – and more importantly who – is next for Lomachenko?

Lomachenko v Davis Unification?

Lomachenko has never ducked a fighter, the Ukrainian having been involved in big fights since the day he turned professional, so it’s safe to assume his next outing will be a unification bout. The one at the top of every fan’s list would be against WBA world champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Tank (29-0-0 27 KO) returns to the ring for the first time since his stoppage win over Ryan Garcia in April 2023 when he fights Frank Martin next month. After that, the American said he wants to face Lomachenko, writing on social media: “He’s after Frank, let me fight Frank first,” in response to a fan questioning Davis’ interest in fighting Loma.

There’s no doubt this is the biggest fight to be made in the lightweight division in terms of interest. Two clash of styles that would pit the slick and skillful Lomachenko against the ferocious power of Davis – and two fighters at the pinnacle of elite level.

Unify against Stevenson?

The other option Lomachenko has to unify the lightweight division is against WBC title holder Shakur Stevenson. The American (21-0-0 10 KO) is fighting next on July 15 against Germany’s Artem Harutyunyan – a fight he is expected to come through comfortably.

Should Stevenson, as expected, retain his title, it could set up a clash with Lomachenko in the fall. That is according to promoter Bob Arum, who represents both Stevenson and Loma.

“If Lomachenko wins and Shakur, who is scheduled to fight in July wins, then for the fall to do a Lomachenko-Shakur fight, every serious boxing fan will be watching that in awe between two great technicians fighting for a unified title,” Arum told Sky Sports.

Indeed, a fight between Stevenson and Lomachenko would see two of the most technically gifted fighters of their generation come up against each other.

An All-Ukrainian Affair Against Berinchyk?

The only vacant title in the lightweight division is the WBO’s, but that will coon be claimed when Denys Berinchyk takes on WBO super-featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete on May 18.

Ukraine’s Berinchyk is the outsider for the fight in San Diego, but should he cause an upset and become the WBO lightweight world champion, that would surely tee up a showdown with his compatriot Lomachenko.

Patriotism is at an all-time high in Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia, so the chance for two Ukrainian boxers to contest a unification world title fight would be too good an opportunity to miss.

Lomachenko to face Navarrete?

If the Berinchyk vs Navarrete fight goes the way it’s expected to, then the Mexican will become the WBO lightweight world champion and could be in line for a unification bout with Lomachenko.

Navarrete has become unbeatable at super-featherweight, so his move to 135lbs in an attempt to become a four-weight world champion was inevitable. If – or when – he claims a lightweight title, he’s likely to remain in the division and defend his belt, which would make a fight with the IBF champion a strong possibility.

Like Stevenson and Loma, Navarrete is promoted by Top Rank and Arum, so it should make any potential negotiations easier to complete.

Loma vs The Other Davis?

Looking away from unification fights, one tantalizing possibility could be for Loma to face fast-rising American Keyshawn Davis.

Davis (10-0-0 7 KO) is quickly making a name for himself as one of the brightest prospects in boxing and is already ranked in the top five by the WBO, IBF, and WBC.

The former Olympian has made no secret of his desire to fight Lomachenko, and he will feel that his world title shot can’t be too far away.

“I want the winner of Lomachenko vs [George] Kambosos,” Davis told Sky Sports in February. “I predict that to be Lomachenko and it would be an honor to fight him.”

Whichever direction Lomachenko chooses to go, it’s certain that he’s going to be involved in another big-time fight against a big-time fighter.
