Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya are still not on good terms, with the feud increasing ahead of the Jaime Munguia fight.
Alvarez defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title on May 4, taking on the undefeated Munguia. Canelo has faced criticism for taking the fight because he avoided David Benavidez. The Mexican monster is his WBC mandatory at 168 pounds, a position he has held for over two years. Benavidez is seen as the biggest threat to Canelo’s reign at 168 pounds.
Alvarez stated that he wanted $150 million-200 million to make that fight. This was seen as a way to price himself out. However, choosing Munguia is a big risk. Canelo knows that he cannot come up short since losing to Munguia would reduce his star power. The fight also means that Canelo has had to be in De La Hoya’s company since he is leading the promotion alongside PBC.
The two have not had a good relationship since Canelo sued Golden Boy and DAZN over a breach of contract. While the lawsuit was settled out of court, Canelo has fired back at the promoter. He accused De La Hoya of being a hypocrite and not loyal. Meanwhile, Oscar stated the only reason they had fallen out was that he had been critical of Canelo trainer, Eddy Reynoso. But any chances of that rift dying down have gone away. Canelo clarified that he did not want anything to do with the promoter.

“I’m not interested in being a friend to him. I’m good where I am. I have nothing to do with him. I wish all the best for him, and that’s it. But I don’t want him in my life. I don’t want him near me or close to me. I don’t want those kinds of vibes in my life,” Canelo said
“The only thing [Alvarez has] against me is my personal life. You want to keep kicking a man while he is down, at the time? I never talk…about [Alvarez] in his personal life. I keep it to boxing. That’s what I know. I have every right to criticize because I have been there as a 10-time world champion in six divisions. I know what’s going on inside the ring. If he wants to attack me in my personal life, then shame on him,” De La Hoya
De La Hoya had similar differences with Ryan Garcia, as shown in the pre-fight presser for the Oscar Duarte fight. Garcia sued Golden Boy, claiming his contract had been breached. He also called out De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins during the presser, with suggestions he would be leaving Golden Boy. However, following the Devin Haney win, Garcia and Golden Boy are on good terms. The lawsuit has been settled, and Garcia is the biggest boxing star. But that is unlikely when it comes to reconciliation between Canelo and De La Hoya.
