Super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia has issued a statement regarding the news that surfaced earlier in the day of his positive test results for Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs).

On Thursday afternoon, via his verified social media accounts, Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) posted the following:

This statement by Munguia was made after some news broke earlier today by Mike Coppinger that Munguia had a positive test result for PEDs for testing that took place for his May 3 rematch against Bruno Surace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Ring posted the following: “VADA informed all relevant parties Wednesday that Jaime Munguia’s A-sample returned an adverse analytical finding for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites following a urine sample on May 4 when he defeated Bruno Surace, sources told The Ring. Munguia has 10 days to request analysis of his B-sample for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites.”

The rematch was booked after Surace scored a brutal sixth-round knockout over Munguia in December. The fight was originally thought of as a tune-up for something bigger, especially when it took place in Munguia’s hometown of Tijuana, MX. The loss was unexpected, and Munguia decided to take on the rematch while hiring Eddy Reynoso (Canelo’s Trainer) to guide him toward victory. Munguia scored a unanimous decision over Surace in the rematch, but this latest news will certainly turn that victory into a no-contest before Munguia awaits the amount of time he will be suspended if the B-Sample also comes back negative.

Now, the boxing world awaits the results and the actions of the sanctioning bodies and commissions regarding how long Munguia should be suspended. On another note, this doesn’t bode well for the legacy of his trainer, Reynoso, who has multiple PED violators (Canelo Alvarez, Oscar Valdez, Julio Cesar Martinez, and Luis Nery) under his watch. Will Reynoso see any backlash from this? Likely, he will not, but time will tell if people hold on to the fact that these fighters blew hot under his watch and that there appears to be more going on at that gym than meets the eye.
