DUBLIN — The rematch between Katie Taylor and Chantelle Cameron bout took place on Saturday, November 25, at the Three Arena in Dublin.
In an incredible performance, Katie Taylor(23-1, 6KOs) exacted revenge on Chantelle Cameron(18-1, 8KOs), her sole professional loss, by winning the world junior welterweight title by majority decision.
Taylor, 37, from Ireland is now one of two female boxers to win two weight classes and become the unchallenged champion, along with Claressa Shields. She is undefeated in the lightweight division as well.
Taylor claimed that she had never been more motivated before a bout, and as a result, her intensity, skillful shot selection, and punch volume helped her defeat Cameron. She defeated Cameron to win the junior welterweight titles from the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO with scores of 98-92, 96-94, and 95-95.
Taylor was given a scare by her English opponent in the opening round on Saturday after being beaten by Cameron in May when she was denied a fairytale ending in her first professional fight in her home Ireland. However, no count was recorded, and Taylor proceeded to rule the following several rounds, erasing the pain she had endured for the past six months.
“That was the longest six months of my life. This was my real homecoming tonight. Whoever wrote me off don't know me very well. Don't ever doubt me. Tonight you saw the real me, and no one can beat me like that," said Taylor in media reports.
"You learn most from your failures. That's where your growth comes from. Never give up," she added.
Taylor will either face Cameron next in a trilogy bout or a rematch with Amanda Serrano in the spring or summer of next year, maybe at an outdoor stadium in Dublin.
"Let's get the trilogy at Croke Park," said Taylor regarding the outdoor arena in Dublin, which can accommodate over 82,000 people.
"Chantelle is a phenomenal fighter and champion, and to have a trilogy would be great," she added.
The victory on Saturday puts an end to speculation that Taylor, who is 37 years old, is prepared for retirement, and it should be sufficient to propel her from third place in the pound-for-pound standings.
