Having a top pick is your best chance to get an NBA star. But this year’s All-Rookie teams show there’s gems available outside the lottery.

Three members of the All-Rookie first team were top-2 picks. There was little doubt about the potential of Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren, even if they exceeded expectations. But Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Brandon Podziemski made the first team after going at No. 18 and No. 19, respectively.
On the second team, Keyonte George was the No. 16 pick and the Grizzlies’ GG Jackson went in the second round, at No. 45. The Warriors’ Trayce Jackson-Davis, who was the highest vote-getter left off the second team, was selected at No. 57.
This doesn’t mean No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson is doomed, nor any of the other lottery picks who didn’t make All-Rookie are destined to be busts. But heading into NBA draft season, it’s important to remember that qualities like team fit — Jaquez specifically is perfect for the Miami Heat — can make a much bigger difference than draft pedigree.
For teams drafting outside the lottery, there’s hope you can get an impact player anywhere in the draft. Maybe even as late as No. 57.
