Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) won a unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 30. With the win, Canelo retains his status as the undisputed super middleweight champion. During the post-fight interview, Canelo stated his intention to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend (which would mean a potential return on May 4, 2024). Taking this into consideration, Big Fight Weekend takes a look at three potential opponents he could face on that date.

Three potential opponents for Canelo
The winner of David Benavidez-Demetrius Andrade
David Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) and Demetrius Andrade (32-0, 19 KOs) have both sought a Canelo showdown over the years. According to BoxingScene.com, both are to face each other on November 25. A win for either fighter could mean a future clash with Canelo since they all fight on the same platform (Showtime). Given their fight date is reportedly November 25, the winner would have plenty of time to prepare for a potential May showdown.
Jermall Charlo
Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) is also reportedly set to return on November 25 on the Benavidez-Andrade card. He remains the WBC’s middleweight champion, but it is not known whether he will be defending the title against José Benavidez Jr. (28-2-1, 19 KOs). Some expected Charlo to be the first opponent of Canelo’s Showtime deal. However, it was later discovered that Canelo would be facing Jermall’s twin brother, Jermell. A Canelo-Jermall Charlo matchup could be on the horizon should Charlo emerge victorious in November.
David Morrell Jr.
David Morrell Jr. (9-0, 8 KOs) is another fighter who fights on Showtime. Morrell last fought on the undercard of Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia where he knocked out Yamaguchi Falcao in the first round. At present, he does not have any fight scheduled. Although Morrell has under ten professional bouts to his name, six of those fights were 12 rounders. Despite not having the same level of professional experience as his peers, Morrell is confident in his abilities to take on the best of his weight class. A Canelo-Morrell matchup would pit one of the best boxers world against one of the best super middleweights today.
