Defense was the free agency focus of the day for the Edmonton Elks  on Monday, who announced that linebacker Nick Anderson and defensive back James Wiggins had joined the team.

Anderson spent the preseason with the New Orleans Saints in the NFL last August before being released. In four seasons at Tulane, he tallied 283 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, six pass deflections and three forced fumbles. He was named on the Second Team All-AAC team in 2022.

Wiggins is back with the Elks after signing with the team in December before being released. He played in the USFL with the New Orleans Breakers last year, posting nine tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble in three games.

The Arizona Cardinals selected him in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he had brief stints for the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers during his NFL career.

It’s been quiet for the Elks since the initial rush of CFL free agency, as the only other player they have signed in the past two weeks is offensive lineman Jonathan Buskey.

Edmonton will be at home for the season opener on June 8 as the Saskatchewan Roughriders come into town.
