Former Florida forward Keyontae Johnson medically cleared, transfers to Kansas State
Nearly two years after he collapsed on the court during a December 2020 game, former Florida Gators forward Keyontae Johnson has been cleared to return for the 2022-23 season. On Saturday, Johnson announced he'll make that return with the Kansas State Wildcats.
Johnson entered the transfer portal in May and said in an Instagram post earlier this week that he had narrowed his options to four schools: Kansas State, Memphis, Nebraska and Western Kentucky. He'll be joining K-State.
Johnson has one year of eligibility left, but could apply for a medical redshirt and likely play another year after missing almost all of the last two seasons.
During his sophomore season with the Gators, Johnson earned All-SEC honors after averaging a team-leading 14.0 points with 7.1 rebounds. Then in the fourth game of his junior year, Johnson collapsed and fell face-first on to the court as his team walked out of a timeout. He was later diagnosed with heart inflammation and wasn't cleared to play at all during the 2021-22 season.
Kansas State finished the 2021-22 season second-to-last in the Big 12 with a 6-12 record in conference play and a 14-17 overall record.
