Leading scorer Myreon Jones reportedly among five Penn State players to enter transfer portal
The Penn State Nittany Lions hiring Purdue Boilermakers assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry as new men's basketball head coach apparently couldn't stop the inevitable.
As Daniel Gallen noted for PennLive, leading scorer Myreon Jones (15.3 points per game, per ESPN stats) is reportedly among five players who have entered the transfer portal less than 24 hours after news first broke that Penn State was hiring Shrewsberry. Both Shrewsberry and Penn State confirmed he was heading to Happy Valley on Monday.
Guard Izaiah Brockington, second on the team with 12.6 PPG, fellow guard Jamari Wheeler, and forwards John Harrar and Trent Buttrick are also entering the transfer portal, according to reports.
Pat Chambers served as Penn State head coach from the start of the 2011-12 season through last summer but resigned in October following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct. Assistant Jim Ferry became interim coach and led PSU to an 11-14 overall record.
Multiple players vented frustrations with the way athletic director Sandy Barbour handled Chambers' departure last fall, and it was widely believed that no hire would prevent some from leaving the program as soon as the team's 2020-21 campaign concluded.
