There’s been a lot to follow in terms of Michigan basketball and the transfer portal . New head coach Dusty May has hit the ground running for next season and has made contact with tons of transfers.
It seems like every day, we are hearing about a couple of more contacts at least. That was true earlier on Monday as Michigan basketball reached out to a Georgetown transfer. Over the weekend, the Wolverines seemed to have momentum with Danny Wolf, the Yale transfer.
Wolf entered the portal with a no-contact designation. He was in touch with Michigan basketball soon after he entered and that had those on the Wolverines side of things feeling good. Yet, Stanford, Northwestern, and even Duke are in the mix now.
FAU players finally hit the transfer portal
However, three players from FAU entered the transfer portal on Monday. Johnell Davis wasn’t one of them. Neither was Alijah Martin but the other all-conference standout for Dusty May, Vlad Goldin, a 7-foot center, has entered the transfer portal.
There were rumors a couple of days ago that he might stay. So the winds can shift in an instant. Goldin is listed as a graduate transfer which means admissions won’t mess this up, but the Wolverines need to have their NIL game on point because other teams will be interested too.
Nick Boyd and Giancarlo Rosado are the other FAU players in the portal. Boyd is a 6-foot-3 guard who started 27 games over the past two seasons. He also came off the bench but averaged 9.3 points this season and 8.9 in 2022-23. Boyd is also a 37.8 shooter for his career from 3-point range and averaged at least 1.8 assists the past two seasons.
Another former FAU fit
That obviously fits the mold of what May wants to do. Boyd also averaged nearly a steal per game. Giancarlo Rosado is a 6-foot-8 forward who has come off the bench for the past three seasons for the Owls. He’s averaged 5.5 points and 2.9 rebounds for his career. Rosado doesn’t shoot 3-pointers — literally — didn’t attempt any in the past two seasons but shoots 54.5 percent from the field. He’s also a solid defender.
Goldin who scored 15.7 points and grabbed 6.9 rebounds last season is the big prize. He’s played well against high-level competition including 19 against Northwestern in the NCAA tournament. He’s not as versatile as Danny Wolf, but he’s more proven and the projection to the Big Ten is easier.
My hope is that Michigan basketball lands all three players. May certainly needs them with at least eight open scholarships right now and this will be something to monitor in the coming days.
