This weekend is going to be an important one for Michigan basketball as key transfer portal targets Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf visit the Wolverines.

Michigan basketball has received multiple projections to land Goldin, the former All-Conference center from FAU. Those projections have come from various recruiting networks too. So it’s hard not to feel good about that one. The Wolverines have also been viewed as the favorite for Wolf, but no crystal balls yet. There are some other heavy hitters involved including UConn, which just won a second straight national title.

Landing Wolf and Goldin, who would be the starting 4/5 for Michigan basketball next season would be huge for Dusty May. He needs a point guard though and that’s where Tre Donaldson comes in.

Has Michigan basketball found its point guard?

The Wolverines have a glaring need at the position following Dug McDaniel’s departure to Kansas State. Johnell Davis, Roddy Gayle, and Connor Essegian are all potential additions to the roster. None are point guards though.

Tre Donaldson is though. The former Auburn point guard started 10 games last season for the Tigers. He averaged 6.7 points in 19 minutes per game, plus 3.2 assists. He also shot 41 percent from 3-point range and is ranked as the No. 67 transfer portal prospect overall by 247 Sports. He’s ranked 16th among point guards.

Donaldson is expected to visit Michigan baskeball later this month and he’s trending with crystal balls, picking projections from Travis Branham and also Davis Moseley, a Michigan hoops insider.

Donaldson is an up-and-coming player. His assist rate is really impressive and he had one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the SEC last season. He just needs more minutes but alongside potentially Goldin, Wolf, and Davis — if the Wolverines land the former FAU standout and others — Donaldson could excel.

If the crystal balls are correct, Dusty May might have found his starting point guard.
