No. 4 Purdue loses to in-state rival Indiana for first time in six years

The Indiana Hoosiers took down their in-state rivals, the No. 4 Purdue Boilermakers, in men's basketball for the first time since 2016 with a 68-65 win Thursday night.

Indiana led by as many as 11 in the first half and maintained the lead for almost all of the second half. But Purdue stormed back and took a 65-63 lead with just over a minute left. The Hoosiers got back on in front with a huge three-pointer from Rob Phinisee with 18 seconds left and hit a couple of free throws in the final seconds to push the lead to three points.

Purdue entered with nine consecutive wins in the rivalry with a streak dating back nearly six years.

The upset effort was led by the combination of Phinisee and Xavier Johnson, who scored 20 points and 18, respectively. Indiana also forced 12 Purdue turnovers while committing just three.

Indiana hired former Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks coach Mike Woodson to lead the program in March 2021.
