Oakland star could end up with Michigan

Trey Townsend was a star all season long for Oakland University, though it wasn't until the 2024 men's NCAA Tournament that his star power became public knowledge.

Sure, Jack Gohlke got all the headlines because of his incredible performance against Kentucky that will go down in March Madness lore, but Townsend was Oakland's rock.

He scored 17 and added 12 rebounds in Oakland's 80-76 upset win over Kentucky and then scored 30 with 13 rebounds in Oakland's overtime loss to NC State in the second round.

This is after Townsend averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Golden Grizzlies during the season.

He was Oakland's star, and he's now "cashing in" on that by entering the transfer portal.

Where will he end up? Right now, it's anyone's guess, but there's good reason to think Townsend will stay within the state. He's reportedly heard from Michigan State regarding a transfer, and he's also expected to have an official visit with the Michigan Wolverines this weekend.

While projecting a player's ability to translate Horizon League success to success in the Big Ten can be unpredictable, Michigan (or whichever program ends up with Townsend) will be able to feel pretty confident about his ability to play with the best of the best college basketball has to offer.
