Rising star Jayden Nunn announces transfer decision

The Baylor Bears have to be excited about the 2023 season now that they know they're going to have former VCU star hooper Jayden Nunn in the fold.

It's being reported that Nunn has committed to transfer to Baylor, choosing the Bears over Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and Penn State. The reason for his transfer? It sounds like it largely came down to former VCU head coach Mike Rhoades heading to Penn State.

That makes Baylor snagging Nunn all the more impressive because Rhoades did have a chance to bring the rising star to Happy Valley. New VCU head coach Ryan Odom also had an opportunity to keep him in the fray.

Nonetheless, Baylor provided an intriguing opportunity for the 6-foot-4 guard.

"The coaching change made me reassess things," Nunn said, per ESPN's Jonathan Givony, regarding VCU. "I felt like Coach Odom is going to build something great at VCU, I really do. I'm impressed with what he's planning, but Baylor felt like it's where I need to be. I felt at home there."

As a sophomore, Nunn averaged 9.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. Those numbers don't jump off the page but consider the intangibles. He shot 40.4 percent from three-point range and averaged 1.5 assist per game, and ESPN considered him likely the most NBA-ready player in the Atlantic 10 this past season.

Speaking of the NBA, Nunn seems excited about Baylor's history of sending guards to the league.

"It's definitely part of the story," he explained. "The NBA is my mission, and I know what Coach Drew and his staff have done there in Waco. But I want to enjoy the experience too, the games and culture matter to me. I connected with the people there in a way that goes beyond the NBA. I hope we do something special. I think we will."
