TCU and Texas Tech have had some intense and fiery games over the last couple of seasons. Two years ago, TCU fans stormed the court after a big win, and this season, the first matchup was no different in intensity.
An offensive shootout saw No. 25 TCU (16-5, 5-3) taking down No. 15 Texas Tech (16-4, 5-2) 85-78.
Both teams were trading blows in the early going, with three-pointers being exchanged between Trevian Tennyson and Darrion Williams. Both teams went on a three minute scoring drought until a three put the Red Raiders up 22-16. Tech led by as many as 11 in the first half but the Comeback Frogs struck again.
Off the back of Micah Peavy, the Frogs took all the momentum from Texas Tech, giving them a 40-36 lead at the half.
Peavy would continue his big game, scoring 10 of the first 13 points for TCU to open up the second half. Tennyson was just as critical on the offensive end, knocking down several triples on his way to 23 points.
The Red Raiders went on a scoring drought, and TCU held on to a 74-65 lead with five minutes to go. However, Texas Tech found its groove and brought the lead down to five in a minute.
Up 76-70 with 1:43 to go, Jameer Nelson Jr. hit a massive three, which provoked a thunderous roar from the Horned Frog faithful. Texas Tech cut it to 81-78, but JaKobe Coles secured the win at the free throw line.
The Horned Frogs knocked down a season-high 11 three-pointers in the win. Peavy went 4-4 from beyond the arc, scoring 18 points. The rebounding was much improved as TCU out-rebounded Tech by seven and allowed zero second-chance points. The win also moves Jamie Dixon one win shy of tying Billy Tubbs for second in wins by a TCU head coach.
TCU has had plenty of recent success at home against Texas Tech. The win on Tuesday night marks the fourth in a row in Fort Worth. They will try to defend home court once again this Saturday when they host Texas at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.
