Greg Gard and the University of Wisconsin basketball program have intensified their efforts to find a replacement for Chucky Hepburn.
Badgernotes.com has learned that Central Arkansas transfer Camren Hunter will begin an official recruiting visit to Madison on Thursday. His visit is expected to last through Saturday.
“Coach [Sharif] Chambliss and Coach Gard called right away and made it known I was a priority and had a plan for how they could develop me,” Hunter told Badgernotes. “With them losing Chucky, they wanted me to step into that role and simply be me.”
Hunter, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound guard, averaged 16.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists during his sophomore season and earned third-team All-Atlantic Sun honors. He missed all of last season due to a broken foot suffered in preseason practice and will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.
The latest Wisconsin basketball transfer target is coming off a visit to Saint Louis. Butler, West Virginia, and Florida State are also in the mix.
“I immediately could feel how passionate they were about me and their plans for me,” Hunter said. “Great group of guys. I’m looking forward to these next two days for sure.”
According to Barttorvik, Hunter finished with a 2.6 points above replacement per game rating by his metric, which would have been the sixth-best on the Badgers last season, for reference.
Currently, the Wisconsin basketball team is expected to return a backcourt consisting of Max Klesmit, John Blackwell, Kamari McGee, and incoming freshman Daniel Freitag in 2024-25.
Adding another guard capable of shouldering some of the offensive load and who is also a solid defender would make a lot of sense for a potential Hepburn replacement. It’s also worth noting that the Badgers staff will have Morehead State guard Mark Freeman on campus this weekend, and UMass forward Matt Cross will also be visiting.
