Alabama and Clemson lost on the same day for first time in the CFP era

Alabama and Clemson have been two of the most dominant college football programs in the past decade, and they've certainly been the crème de la crème of the College Football Playoff era.

So both programs losing on the same day? Yeah, that's pretty rare. In fact, it's so rare that it has never actually happened since the CFP has been a thing. The last time it actually happened was on Nov. 30, 2013.

That's a college football lifetime.

Talk about a bad weekend for these powerhouses. No. 6 Alabama lost, 32-31, to rival LSU, ranked No. 10, in overtime. In the meantime, Clemson saw its undefeated season ruined at the hands of the unranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who beat the No. 4 Tigers, 35-14.

Alabama's loss was its second of the season, and the Crimson Tide have suffered in the polls as a result. Once the No. 1 team in the nation, Nick Saban's squad has fallen to No. 10. While that ranking alone would be a high mark worth celebrating for many programs, it's a valley for a program that has been in the College Football Playoff every season besides 2019-20 and has won the whole darn thing three times.

For Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers, the CFP run has been just as magical. Clemson had been in the CFP for six seasons in a row before missing it last season after a 9-3 campaign. Clemson won the CFP in 2016-17 and 2018-19.

After the loss to Notre Dame, Clemson fell seven spots in the ranking to No. 12, which is a season-low for the Tigers.

Four undefeated teams currently top the AP Poll, with Georgia back up at No. 1 overall after the Bulldogs beat previously unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Tennessee, 27-13.

Ohio State, Michigan, and TCU are the programs ranked No. 2 through No. 4, respectively.
