Clemson athletics confirms 28 positive coronavirus tests; 23 among football players

Clemson University added itself to the list of organizations that reported a coronavirus outbreak on Friday.

Per Georgia television station WRDW and other outlets, Clemson announced that 28 student-athletes returned positive COVID-19 results out of 315 tests. Most individuals were described to be asymptomatic. None required hospitalization as of the start of the weekend.

The Athletic's Grace Raynor reported 23 of those 28 athletes are football players.

Recently, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Darien Rencher were among individuals who spoke at a student-led protest following the killing of George Floyd. It's not known if that gathering led to the test results confirmed by the school on Friday.

Clemson joined the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning,  San Francisco 49ers, and PGA Tour as entities responsible for confirmed or leaked positive coronavirus tests on June 19.

Earlier on Friday, J. Brady McCollough of the Los Angeles Times reported that up to 30 UCLA football players are concerned head coach Chip Kelly may not strictly adhere to all coronavirus-related protocols and guidelines once athletes report to facilities on Monday. Some suggested they are willing to boycott team activities and games until they feel safe.

The University of Houston, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Texas Longhorns have also experienced COVID-19 outbreaks this month.
