Coastal Carolina-Troy football game postponed due to COVID-19

The Troy Trojans won't have an opportunity to host the No. 15-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday, after all.

Troy has confirmed that the contest has been postponed due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the program, subsequent quarantines, and injuries to one position group.

The Sun Belt Conference is working with the schools to reschedule. However, the teams don't share an open date, as Troy is set to face the South Alabama Jaguars in a previously postponed game on Dec. 12.

"While postponing a game is never an easy decision to make, it was the correct one in this instance as the health and well-being of our student-athletes and staff are of the utmost importance," Troy athletic director Brent Jones said in the prepared statement.

"I would like to recognize and thank the Sun Belt Conference staff and officials from Coastal Carolina for their collaborative approach and effort to come to this very difficult decision. I would be remiss if I did not thank our amazing staff of medical professionals and athletic trainers for their expertise in guiding us through these unprecedented times."

Coastal Carolina athletic director Matt Hogue added:

"We are certainly disappointed for our student-athletes with not being able to play this weekend but completely understand the situation. We knew there could be interruptions this season as we work through this environment and the right decision was made in regards to health and safety."

The Chanticleers-Trojans showdown joins a long list of Saturday games removed from the calendar because of coronavirus-related issues. Also on Friday, Arizona State-Cal was canceled after multiple individuals associated with the Sun Devils, including head coach Herm Edwards, tested positive.

Both Coastal Carolina and Troy are scheduled to play on Nov. 21. The Chanticleers will host the Appalachian State Mountaineers, while Troy intends to face the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.
