Duke parts ways with David Cutcliffe after 14 seasons

David Cutcliffe is out as the head football coach of the Duke Blue Devils after 14 seasons, the school announced Sunday.

"After some detailed and amiable discussions with [athletic director] Nina King, we've mutually decided that it is the right time for change in the leadership of Duke Football," Cutcliffe said in a statement.

"We are extremely grateful for David's leadership over the past 14 seasons," King said. "He lifted our program to unprecedented heights, both on and off the field, while maintaining the core values of the University and we could not be more appreciative of his mentorship of every student-athlete who played for Duke during his tenure."

Cutcliffe, 67, led Duke to a 77-97 record during his tenure with six trips to bowl games. In 2021, Duke finished 3-9 and was winless in ACC play for the first time with Cutcliffe as head coach.

Before his time at Duke, Cutcliffe was the head coach at Ole Miss for seven seasons and led the Rebels to a win in the 2004 Cotton Bowl.

Cutcliffe has earned a reputation for developing quarterbacks and coached Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Daniel Jones and Heath Shuler in the college ranks before they all eventually became first-round NFL draft picks.
