Sam Huard, the former University of Washington quarterback, didn't waste any time getting people excited about his possibilities for Cal Poly by completing his first nine passes Saturday in the Mustangs' closing spring scrimmage.

On Saturday in San Luis Obispo, the 6-foot-2, 193-pound sophomore from Bellevue, Washington, wowed everyone by completing 11 of 12 passes for 145 yards and touchdown passes of 12 yards to Tyrece Fairly-Diyem and 33 yards to Logan Booher.

Huard, who transferred out of the UW in late January, is in competition for the Cal Poly QB job with redshirt freshman Bo Kelly from Dana Point, California.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Kelly completed 10 of his 13 passes for 110 yards and also connected with on a 41-yard touchdown strike.

Paul Wulff, the former WSU and Eastern Washington coach, is in his first season as the Cal Poly leader and will choose one of these guys to lead his team its Sept. 2 season opener against San Diego at home.

"They did a nice job, they all came in and played well and I am real proud of their performances today," Wulff said. "The progression of our players through these 15 practice sessions — you obviously want to get better and they will — they all did a nice job out there today."
