Florida State should be happy where it's at

College football's realignment wheels aren't done spinning but maybe they should be.

Florida State remains unhappy with the ACC and was one of three universities to vote to block the additions of Cal, Stanford and SMU.

College football insider Bruce Feldman told Fox Sports that it's only a matter of time before Florida State (and Clemson and North Carolina) make a serious play for the Big Ten or SEC.

The reasons for a move are purely financial. While the ACC shortened the financial gap between it and the Big Ten and SEC with its additions making major financial concessions, the two powerhouse conferences in college football still offer more revenue to their members.

But the Seminoles need to think seriously about the other consequences of switching conferences. They can look at programs like Maryland, Nebraska and Texas A&M to see that an increase in riches doesn't translate to on-field success.

The Terrapins' 8-5 record last year was their best since becoming a Big Ten member in 2014. Nebraska peaked at 10-4 in the conference in 2012.

Florida State would get lost in the SEC, relegated to a tier with the Aggies where a 10-win season would constitute a major success.

FSU is on track to have the No. 6 recruiting class of 2024, which would mark its first top-10 recruiting class since 2017. In short, Florida State isn't the destination school it thinks it is, and toiling away in mediocrity in the Big Ten or SEC won't make it more attractive.

Chances are the money will win out and Florida State will be in another conference well before the ACC's media rights deal with ESPN expires after the 2035-36 school year.

The school will get richer and all will be merry. At least, until the Seminoles hit the football field. Then, fans will wish it never left.
