Jason Garrett appears to have made decision on Stanford HC job

It looks like Jason Garrett is removing himself from the running in Stanford's search for its next head coach.

It was reported Thursday that Garrett was among the finalists for the gig, along with Sacramento State coach Troy Taylor. Per Stewart Mandel of The Athletic, candidates who were in the running but are no longer being considered include former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman, and former BYU and Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall.

David Shaw resigned as the Cardinal head coach in late November following a 3-9 season that saw the team lose its final five games. Shaw was Stanford's head coach for 12 years and is the program's all-time winningest coach at 96-54.

Garrett took over as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys after Wade Phillips was fired midway through the 2010 campaign and was at the helm through the 2019 season. He went 85-67 during his tenure and helped lead the team to three playoff appearances, but he went just 2-3 in the postseason.

TheĀ 56-year-old Garrett was the New York Giants offensive coordinator during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

He has never coached at the college level but has spent 2022 as a color analyst for NBC's coverage of Notre Dame contests. Garrett's also an NFL pregame analyst for NBC's "Football Night in America."
