Ravens assistant a reported front-runner for college coaching job

Greg Roman has been on John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens staff since 2017, but the longtime offensive coordinator may soon have another job.

Following Sunday’s 35-26 loss to BYU, Stanford head coach David Shaw announced he was stepping down as head coach of the Cardinal, prompting The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman to suggest Roman as a likely replacement.

“Roman only spent two seasons with the Cardinal but was a big part of (Jim) Harbaugh elevating that program into a power,” Feldman wrote. “The 50-year-old from New Jersey went with Harbaugh to the NFL, where they turned the San Francisco 49ers around and made it to the Super Bowl. The idea of Roman, with perhaps Vic Fangio coming back too as his defensive coordinator, might sound really good to old Stanford folks. Roman knows what it took and takes to get Stanford going, but does he want to be a college coach again?”

Roman served as the tight ends and offensive tackles coach at Stanford from 2009 to 2010 under Harbaugh’s brother Jim. He then left the school to join Jim as the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers in 2011.

The Ravens have the 11th-ranked offense in the NFL, averaging 356.1 yards per game. Baltimore ranks second in rushing offense (162.7 yards per game), ninth in scoring offense (25 points per game), and 26th in passing offense (193.4 yards per game).

Under Roman’s guidance, the Ravens have finished second, 19th, and sixth, respectively, in total offense in the last three years. They also had the top-scoring offense in his first year as the team’s offensive coordinator.
