HOUSTON — Yesterday, the Maize and Blue downed Washington in the National Championship game, 34-13, earning the program’s 12th-ever title. After the game, we heard from Michigan football veteran offensive line Trente Jones, who shone brightly in the Ohio State game, Big Ten title game, Rose Bowl game, and National Championship game. Trente Jones has been with Michigan football for five seasons now, and while he has not been the most noted lineman on the field for the Wolverines, he has been impressive when given the chance.
After Michigan football won the National Championship on Monday, we spoke with Trente Jones about what might come next — is he planning on sticking around for a sixth year? Heading to the NFL Draft? Below is what he said.
“(Heading to the NFL Draft) is what it’s feeling like right now,” he said. He noted that he will take some time to evaluate everything as decision time draws near.
What comes next after the National Championship Game?
We followed up by asking what comes next for Trente Jones if the National Championship Game is his final time wearing the Maize and Blue.
“Prepping for the NFL Draft, becoming the best offensive lineman I can be, and being prepared for the next level,” he said. Jones also added some things that he wants NFL scouts to know about him and his game. “Trente has grit, Trente is for the team, he’s selfless, and he’s gonna double-team that sh– out of somebody,” he said with a laugh.
Trente Jones knew he had greatness in him all along
This season, Trente Jones did not earn a starting job on Michigan’s elite offensive line until Zak Zinter went down against Ohio State. After shining bright against the Buckeyes, in the Big Ten Championship, in the Rose Bowl, and in the National Championship, Trente Jones feels like he’s proven his talent to the country.
“I knew — in me — that I had it in me,” Trente Jones said. “And now it’s (out there) for everybody to see. I knew at the end of the day that I had that DAWG in me for sure.”
Whatever comes next, Jones is destined for more greatness
Jones may have not been the Wolverines’ top tackle all year long, but the Michigan football veteran more than proved his worthiness of NFL Draft attention throughout Michigan’s past few games. If the National Championship Game was indeed his last with the Maize and Blue, some team at the next level is about to get a steal, seeing as he is largely flying under the radar right now.
Of course, when scouts get to see his tape, and the NFL combine rolls around, Jones may no longer be a less-known prospect.
