Report: College Football Playoff won't expand to eight teams for pandemic-altered season

ESPN's Heather Dinich reported on Wednesday afternoon that the College Football Playoff won't expand from four to eight teams for the 2020 season widely altered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Dinich wrote that Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott suggested the expansion that was not approved by the CFP management committee.

CFP executive director Bill Hancock explained the decision to ESPN and added that the playoffs could be expanded down the road:

"They decided that doing that now would be such a significant change, and come with so many challenges, especially given the timing with the season already underway, that they concluded that the best outcome would be to make no changes in the format. They will continue to discuss the future, which is just good, responsible business practice, although I must say that dealing with COVID has become everyone's focus now."

Stanford coach David Shaw told reporters on Wednesday that "we all know" the college playoff will eventually expand to six or eight teams at some point.

"We're just going to do it very, very slowly and methodically, but it's the only thing that makes sense," Shaw said.
