Report: Former Cowboys HC Jason Garrett finalist for Stanford job

Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is reportedly one of the finalists for the Stanford head-coaching job.

Stewart Mandel of The Athletic reported Thursday that Garrett and Sacramento State coach Troy Taylor are among the final contenders for the gig. According to Mandel, candidates who were in the running but are no longer being considered include former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman and former BYU and Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall.

Garrett has never coached at the college level but has spent 2022 as a color analyst for NBC's coverage of Notre Dame contests. He's also an NFL pregame analyst for NBC's "Football Night in America."

David Shaw resigned as the Cardinal head coach in late November after 12 years at the helm. Shaw finished his career as Stanford's all-time winningest coach at 96-54, but the group went just 3-9 in 2022.

Garrett took over as the Cowboys head coach in Week 10 of the 2010 season after Wade Phillips was fired and remained the leader through the 2019 campaign. The former Dallas quarterback went 85-67 as the head coach and helped lead the team to three postseason appearances but went just 2-3 in the playoffs.

The 56-year-old Garrett was the New York Giants offensive coordinator during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
